Short Bio
Sherwood Sledge hails from
Baltimore, Maryland, moved to the City of Los Angeles in 1964, and
immediately began singing in the gospel community until 1970, when
he formally expanded his vocal talents in the rhythm and blues, jazz
and pop music entertainment circles.
Since that time, Sherwood is recognized in the music world as an
exciting contemporary modern day jazz vocalist, with a voice quality
likened to Arthur Prysock, Herb Jeffries and Billy Eckstein.
Sherwood Sledge appeared with such renowned artists as Quincy Jones,
Patti LaBelle, Freda Payne, and many, many more. Per request of
Quincy Jones, Sherwood sang on the Famed "Roots" album by Quincy
Jones and was distinguished with a gold album.
Sherwood
Sledge is a unique vocal talent, and enjoyed by all who experience
his superior voice quality and range. His vocal talent and music
knowledge is a special gift.
How
does one describe Sherwood Sledge? Is he a Jazz Vocalist? A Blues
Man? A Gospel Singer?
Jazz lovers will insist that his music sounds
unmistakably like Jazz. Blues devotees will resonate with Sherwood's
clearly blues point of view. And anyone familiar his work with
Quincy Jones, or who has ever heard Sherwood sing as featured
soloist with the First AME church choir in Los Angeles will peg him
as one of the world's most inspired gospel singer.
Why even debate the issue? Here is the delightful fact of the
matter: Sherwood Sledge is uniquely himself. Whether he is singing a
jazz standard or a Fats Domino song, Sherwood brings a level of
sincerity and emotion to his music that is truly amazing.
